How To Use The Alpha From Lightness (Unmult Effect):

  1. Open After Effects
  2. Create a New Composition
  3. Add Footage Layer (such as a video)
  4. Add a still or animated texture with a black background
  5. Select Texture Layer
  6. Go to Effects & Presets
  7. Search for Unmult
  8. Select Effect and drag on to footage layer
  9. Go to Effect Controls
  10. Change ‘Take Alpha From’ to ‘Lightness’ or ‘Luminance’
  11. Add Color Fill or Color Overlay Layer Style to change color of texture
