This tutorial will show you a fast and easy way to animate a single texture layer using the Motion Tile Effect in Adobe After Effects CC 2023. This technique works particularly well for grungy and collage-style texture animations.

  1. How To Animate a Texture Layer using Motion Tile in Adobe After Effects:

    1. Create a new Composition (1920 x 1080, 24fps, 10 seconds is used in tutorial)
    2. Add a Texture Layer to animate
    3. Tap S to scale texture as necessary
    4. Go to Effects & Presets Panel (Window…Effects & Presets)
    5. Search for ‘Motion Tile’
    6. Drag ‘Motion Tile’ on the Texture Layer
    7. Go to ‘Effect Controls’ panel
    8. Hold Option or Alt and click on the stopwatch next to ’Tile Center’
    9. Go to Expression Editor in the Timeline for the Texture Layer
    10. Enter posterizeTime(12);
    11. Tap Enter to go to new line
    12. Type wiggle(50,1000);
    13. Tap Spacebar to preview animation
    14. Tap S to scale texture as necessary
    15. Adjust posterizeTime(12) Frame Rate to slow down or speed up animation
    16. Adjust wiggle(50,1000) to experiment with different animation speeds and movement
    17. Add text and other elements
    18. Add adjustment layer with Posterize Time effect to control frame rate for the Comp
