Line Boil Effect:
This occurs when frames of an animation are out of alignment so it creates an imperfect ‘jiggle’ which is great for stop-motion or hand-drawn animations.

Expressions Used:

  1. time*100
  2. posterizeTime(4);time*100 

How To Create The Line Boil Effect on a Text Layer in Adobe After Effects CC 2022:

  1. Create a New Composition (cmd/ctrl + N)
  2. Click on ‘Type Tool’ and enter text
  3. Align to Center of Comp
  4. Select Text Layer
  5. Go to Effects & Presets and search for ‘Turbulent Displace’
  6. Drag ‘Turbulent Displace’ on the Type in the Comp Window
  7. Select Type Layer in the Layers Pane and Go to ‘Effect Controls’ 
  8. For Amount, enter 10
  9. For Size, Enter 6
  10. Twirl open ’Evolution Options’
  11. Press the Option (Mac) or Alt (PC) and click on the stopwatch next to ‘Random Seed’
  12. Enter the Expression: time*100 and press the Spacebar to preview the animation

How To Create Add Posterize Time to Expression (for Stop Motion look):

  1. Tap EE to reveal all expressions
  2. Click in the Expression for ‘Random Seed’
  3. Move cursor before the Time Expression
  4. Type posterizeTime(4)…or enter desired Frames per Second in the parentheses
  5. Enter Semicolon after posterizeTime
  6. Type in time*100
  7. Final Expression: posterizeTime(4);time*100 
  8. Press Spacebar to Preview
