After Effects CC 2022: How To Create Line Boil Text Effect

This tutorial will show you how to create a line boil or ‘jiggle’ effect on Text Layers (or other graphics)l in Adobe After Effects CC 2022.

Line Boil Effect:
This occurs when frames of an animation are out of alignment so it creates an imperfect ‘jiggle’ which is great for stop-motion or hand-drawn animations.
Font Used In Tutorial:
Londrina Solid (Google Fonts)
Keyboard Shortcut:
Tap EE to reveal all expressions
Expressions Used:
- time*100
- posterizeTime(4);time*100
How To Create The Line Boil Effect on a Text Layer in Adobe After Effects CC 2022:
- Create a New Composition (cmd/ctrl + N)
- Click on ‘Type Tool’ and enter text
- Align to Center of Comp
- Select Text Layer
- Go to Effects & Presets and search for ‘Turbulent Displace’
- Drag ‘Turbulent Displace’ on the Type in the Comp Window
- Select Type Layer in the Layers Pane and Go to ‘Effect Controls’
- For Amount, enter 10
- For Size, Enter 6
- Twirl open ’Evolution Options’
- Press the Option (Mac) or Alt (PC) and click on the stopwatch next to ‘Random Seed’
- Enter the Expression: time*100 and press the Spacebar to preview the animation
How To Create Add Posterize Time to Expression (for Stop Motion look):
- Tap EE to reveal all expressions
- Click in the Expression for ‘Random Seed’
- Move cursor before the Time Expression
- Type posterizeTime(4)…or enter desired Frames per Second in the parentheses
- Enter Semicolon after posterizeTime
- Type in time*100
- Final Expression: posterizeTime(4);time*100
- Press Spacebar to Preview
