ep46: The Screencast Show

EP46_THE SCREENCAST SHOW

What is Screencasting?

What tools do I use to make screencast videos?
What makes a good screencast video?
What are the benefits of making screencasts for online businesses?

Ask Mike Anything

Question: Do you have a recommendation for a small light for an iPhone for live streaming?
Answer:

Light #1:
The LumeCube ($79)

Light #2:
The Manfrotto LUMIMUSE 8 LED Light ($89)

What is Screencasting?

Screencasting is simply recording the screen of your device which may be your laptop or your iPhone or iPad using software most typically (you could use a camera and point it at your monitor).

Screen casting is often called ‘over the shoulder’ video because you are sharing your screen as you see it. It’s actually a great concept and extremely effective teaching approach.

Ways to use screencasting:

Training employees
Virtual assistants
Explaining/Teaching anything you do on a computer/iDevice.
Communicate with clients about a project (designers….)

HOW DO I MAKE BASIC SCREENCAST VIDEOS?

Screencast Software:
Camtasia(new favorite)
Screenflow (using less, but still good)
Quicktime (free for Mac users)

The Gear I use for making screencast videos:
MacBook Pro and my iPhone and iPad on occasion.
Shure SM7B Microphone
Allen & Heath Zed 10 Mixer.
Logitech c930
Cowboy Studio Green Screen
Reflector(Mirror iDevices wirelessly….great software)
Adobe Premiere
Adobe Premiere (I use this for final video, but not necessary)

RECIPE FOR GOOD SCREENCASTS:

Tip #1: Preparation. Write an outline or detailed notes.

FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU WANT TO COVER IN THE VIDEO BEFORE YOU PRESS RECORD AND TYPE IT OUT OR WRITE IT DOWN.

Mike’s Screencast Recipe:
1. Who is this video for?
2. What is the purpose of this video?
3. What do I want the viewer to learn or take away from this video?
4. What steps will be covered and in what order?
5. What is the simplest way to summarize the lesson step by step?
6. What do you want them to do after completing the video? Include a call to action.

Tip #2: Be sure to cover everything that is in the title and description of your video.

Tip #3: Be concise and to the point.

What are the advantages of simple screencast videos?

  • Minimal gear required and setup is relatively inexpensive (Computer and microphone will do it)
  • Camera is not necessary, therefore
  • Good lighting is not required.
  • You will never run out of topics. Everything you do on your computer or iDevice can be made into a screencast video.
  • Screencast help you become a better teacher and communicator
  • You will get better at editing video in general
  • The more you share, the more you become an expert in your field
  • Screencasting your processes makes you more proficient at everything you do and it may also show you areas of weakness
  • Screencasting is great content and can be spread across all of your social channels.
  • Audience engagement. Make screencasts to help your audience and they will respond.
  • Screencasts are the building blocks for making classes, tutorials and all online education.

ep45: The Skillshare Show

  1. What is Skillshare and how does it work?
  2. What is required to make a Skillshare class?
  3. What are the benefits for podcasters and online businesses?

Ask Mike Anything:

Question: Do you have a recommendation for a good iPhone holder to put on a small tripod?

Answer:
MeFoto Sidekick 360 ($30)
The Manfrotto Twist Grip ($49)

INTRO:

Skillshare started in NYC and has been around since 2011.
They have over 1.8 million students
$5 million+ have been paid to students
6,000 classes in the library.
Skillshare is community based

Project Based Learning:

Skillshare is that the platform is project-based
The goal is that the end of every class, the student actually creates or makes something which is the most effective way to learn anything.

How Skillshare Works:

Skillshare is membership based model. There are free classes and premium classes and the instructors decide whether they want to charge or give away for free. Most charge.

The cost is $9.99 per month and you can take unlimited classes. Just like Netflix.

Mike’s Discount Code:
Sign up here for Skillshare and sign up you will get 3 months of Premium for .$99

What can you learn on Skillshare?:

Skillshare is a smorgasbord of classes these days, but it is really heavy on design and creative arts, entrepreneurship and social marketing, technology and quite a bit of lifestyle topics such as meditation, health and fitness, and productivity and mindset stuff. You name it and it is probably on Skillshare, but I would say it’s a great place if you want to learn Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Photography & Video and lots of Instagram and social media tips and tricks.

Requirements to Teach:

Anyone can teach on Skillshare and the only real requirement is that you fill out the class with titles, descriptions, etc and that each class you teach has a project students can

Length of classes:

Skillshare is really encouraging ‘snack-sized’ classes of 20-minutes as the ideal length.

What to Teach?:

To teach on Skillshare or online in general the easiest approach is to think small and simple.
Whatever your specialty is, look at small pieces and start there.

A very good starting point is to just think about a typical work day whether it be at your full time gig or your side project.
What do you do everyday that is second nature to you and almost seems silly because its so easy.

My favorite Derek Sivers quote:

what’s obvious to you is amazing to others.

Why Teach?:

  1. Money: Skillshare has an interesting revenue sharing plan. The more classes you teach and students you have, the more you make. Some estimate the revenue at $1/student. #notbad
  2. Authority & Marketing: Having classes online is kind of like having a book. You become an instant expert in many peoples eyes if you have an online course and actually you do become an expert the more you talk about a topic and teach so that is a good thing.
  3. A better you: Making online classes is the ultimate one man band training program. Making a class on Skillshare will stretch you creatively, technically, intellectually and help you grow as an online presence. The more you teach and talk about your subject of expertise, the better you are becoming. You will get better at writing and speaking and time management and so many different skill-sets after creating a course. Your confidence will soar and you will be a better you and that is not a bad thing. Teaching and creating courses is hard work, but extremely rewarding.

ep44: The Affiliate Show

Tagline/Quote:
What is affiliate marketing?
What are the advantages for podcasters and content creators?
How do you get started?

Ask Mike Anything

Question: Do you have a recommendation for a multi-purpose lightweight tripod that will be good for traveling?

Answer:
1. MeFoto DayTrip ($99)
2. MeFoto BackPack ($149)

What is affiliate marketing?:

This definition comes from Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income:

Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s (or company’s) products. You find a product you like, promote it to others, and earn a piece of the profit for each sale that you make.

Simple Definition:
I like a product and sign up as an affiliate partner.
I promote the product to my listeners and audience
I receive a commission for every product that gets sold.

Legal:
You must always disclose when you are promoting a product and getting an affiliate commission. Be sure to always honor this legal obligation as it is no big deal and the right thing to do.

My disclosure statement:
Some of the links on this page are affiliate links, meaning at no additional cost to you, I will earn a commission if you decide to make a purchase. I only recommend products I use and love and if I think will be useful for you or your brand.

Affiliate Marketing for Podcasters is a Win-Win for everyone. Why?

I promote someone else’s product and each time someone makes a purchase, the vendor wins.
I tell you about a product that I use and love and it helps you create content better or it improves your business or life so you win.
I get a small commission or maybe free products so I can afford to keep making content, so I win.

Be Authentic:
Only promote products you use or believe in and that you sincerely think will help your listeners or audience, affiliate marketing is all good in my book It’s not about the money, it’s about the value of products or services you are recommending and as long as you never lose track of this, affiliate marketing is a great thing in my opinion.

Advantages of Affiliate Marketing:
–Making Money
–Promote other people’s products rather than having to create everything yourself
–Your audience gets introduced to great products and services you believe in and you are confident will help them.
–Establish yourself as an authority, while making money so you can keep making content.

Affiliate Programs I Belong To (Partial List)?
Amazon
Bluehost.com
Elegant Themes (Divi)
Screenflow
Camtasia
Udemy

What affiliate programs should you apply to?
I look at every product I use and love and sign up for their affiliate program if they have one.
Look on the footer of most company websites and you will often see Affiliate or Partner links and sign up if you believe in the product.

5 strategies to promote affiliate products

  1. Tutorials:
Make tutorials about products you are an affiliate of.
  2. Lead Magnets & PDF Resources:
Give away free guides for signing up to a newsletter and fill the guide with affiliate products you recommend.
  3. Podcasts:
In the show notes, provide affiliate links to the products and services I mention.
  4. Gear Reviews & Video:
Gear reviews are a great way to establish authority and leave the affiliate link is in the video description notes.
  5. Live Streaming & Behind the Scenes:
Snapchat, Periscope, Instagram or Facebook Live are great platforms to introduce your followers to tools and demonstrate how to use them. You can create ‘Pretty Links’ easily and share your affiliate links with live viewers.
